Southampton Practical Cardiac MRI Course
University Hospital Southampton, 17 - 21 June 2019
This five-day course is now in its 9th year and covers the theory and practical applications of cardiac MRI (CMR). It is designed for a small number of delegates to allow for hands-on workstation experience, small group tutorials and live scanning sessions – the emphasis being on developing the practical skills and knowledge to perform and report CMR. The course includes 14 hours of didactic lectures, four hours of observed live case scanning and 13 hours of workstation-based tutorials and case reviews. The programme covers the physics of basic MR through to advanced cardiac techniques including the practical application of the theory to optimise image acquisition. Clinical topics covered include: cardiac anatomy and function, late gadolinium enhancement, cardiomyopathies including the use of myocardial mapping techniques, basic congenital heart disease, and stress imaging with both adenosine and dobutamine. In addition we will also describe and demonstrate the role of newer scanning sequences, particularly compressed sense imaging, to improve image quality in potentially challenging patient groups.
Siemens Healthineers provides the workstations for the afternoon sessions, with one workstation being shared between two delegates. These sessions will cover CMR post-processing techniques as well as approximately 50 case reviews. Cases not reviewed during the course sessions will be provided electronically for private study.
This is a 5-day course covering the theory and practical applications of cardiac MRI (CMR). The lectures and clinical cases can contribute towards SCMR accreditation and training logbooks for the Cardiology and Radiology training programs. Certificates of completion of the course and clinical case logbook will be issued. 31 CME points have previously been awarded for this course and have been applied for.
Five days: 09:00 Monday 17 June to 13:00 Friday 21 June 2019
The course is aimed at Radiologists and Cardiologists with no or limited previous experience in CMR, who wish to gain the practical skills and theoretical knowledge to perform successful CMR examinations, although it will also be of use to delegates with greater experience who wish to update their knowledge. It is appropriate for both consultant grade clinicians and trainees.
- Understanding of MRI physics as applied to CMR
- Principles of performing a successful and safe CMR examination
- Understand the role of new imaging techniques (particularly compressed sense imaging) to improve image quality in potentially challenging patient groups
- Knowledge of the role of CMR in clinical practice and appropriate indications
- Practical skills to perform CMR post-processing including LV & RV function analysis and flow analysis
- Knowledge of the indications and contraindications for Stress CMR and to perform and report Stress CMR
- Review and analysis of clinical CMR cases
The course will be delivered by a team of consultants, physicists and radiographers, with extensive CMR experience and long history of running successful courses. The Physics course will once again be delivered by Dr John Ridgway who has an international reputation and expertise in teaching CMR physics.
